Riverside is a city in southwestern
California and seat of Riverside County located on the Riverside River. It is a center for growing and packing citrus fruits. Manufactures include irrigation equipment, housings for aircraft engines, electronic equipment, custom auto wheels, paper products, and plastics.Riverside is the seat of La Sierra University (1922); California Baptist College (1950); the University of California-Riverside (1954), which has a citrus experimental station and a salinity lab; and a community college. March Air Reserve Base is nearby. Attractions in the area include Riverside Municipal Museum, housing exhibits and artifacts of local history; the California Museum of Photography; Heritage House, a restored 1891 house; and the California Citrus State Historic Park. The Parent Washington Navel Orange Tree, planted in 1873 and one of two original orange trees in California, and the historic Mission Inn are landmarks in the city.
A land development company purchased the site and plotted the community in 1870; the city incorporated in 1883. Its rapid early growth was based on citrus farming; industry developed in the early 20th century.
