San Bernardino, city in southern California and seat of San Bernardino County. The city is located at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains in the eastern extreme of a huge metropolitan region centered on Los Angeles. San Bernardino is a transportation, commercial, and residential center. Manufactures of the metropolitan area include furniture, food products, plastic products, aerospace and electronic equipment, and medical equipment. The city is served by San Bernardino International Airport.

In San Bernardino are California State University-San Bernardino, a community college, and Heritage House, a museum displaying furnishings from the late 1890s. The city serves as a gateway to San Bernardino National Forest. The National Orange Show Citrus Fair and Route 66 Rendezvous are annual events.

The site of the city was named by Spanish Franciscan missionaries because they arrived in 1810 on the feast day of San Bernardino of Siena. Mormon settlers came to the area in the 1850s and plotted the community; city incorporation took place in 1854. The city is located in what is known locally as the Inland Empire, one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation in the late 1980s. Revitalization of the downtown area was underway in the mid-1990s. The San Bernardino International Airport and Trade Center, which includes commercial and industrial complexes and a world trade center, is located on the site of the former Norton Air Force Base, which closed in 1994.
