Exeter (New Hampshire), is a town located in Rockingham County which is in southeastern New Hampshire, on the Exeter River. Exeter settled and incorporated 1638. Major products include textiles, leather items, and electronic equipment. Exeter is the site of the Phillips Exeter Academy, a noted preparatory school founded in 1781; the Gilman-Clifford House (mid-17th century), The Ladd-Gilman House is home to the American Independence Museum; and the Soldiers' Memorial, designed by the American sculptor Daniel Chester French, who was born here. The town was established in 1638 by the Reverend John Wheelwright and a group of his followers after he was exiled from Massachusetts Bay Colony for supporting the American religious reformer Anne Hutchinson. Exeter was the capital of New Hampshire during the American Revolution.
