| Roseburg, Oregon is a city located in southwestern Oregon on the Umpqua River. Roseburg is 60 miles south of Eugene and the seat of Douglas County. Situated amid the Douglas-fir stands of the Cascade Range (to the east) and Coast Ranges (to the west), Roseburg has prospered through the 20th century as the focal point for a vast logging and lumbering industry. Tourism is also an important aspect of the economy, and the city functions as a gateway to Crater Lake National Park, located about 60 miles to the southeast. A community college is located 5 miles north of the city. Originally known as Deer Creek, Roseburg is named for Aaron Rose, who settled the city's bowl-shaped valley in 1851. The Oregon and California (now Southern Pacific) Railroad arrived in 1872, stimulating growth, and the city was incorporated the same year. | ||
