Salem, Oregon is the state capital and Oregon's third largest city. Salem is the county seat of Marion County, but a portion of Salem lies across the Willamette River in Polk County. This area of Salem is often referred to as West Salem.

Salem is located in the heart of the Willamette Valley approximately 47 miles south of Portland and 64 miles north of Eugene. Salem is the hub of state government and the sates farming communities. The valley surrounding Salem is know to be some of the richest and most ferial farm land in the world and home to several major agricultural food processing plants.

Salem is one of Oregon's oldest communities. In 1842 missionaries established the Oregon Institute. When the mission was dissolved in 1844 it was decided to create a town site on the Institute lands. Salem is the anglicized form of the Hebrew word Shalom, meaning peace.

In 1851 the state capital was moved from Oregon City. In 1855 the capital was moved  to Corvallis and  later that same year to Salem.
